What Is Their Training Background?
First and most importantly, consider their background. Who have they trained in the past and what sort of results did these individuals see?
As much as you can, you’ll want to match the results they’ve had to the goals that you have set for yourself. If they, for instance, have helped many people shed 10, 20, and 30 pounds, if your goal is weight loss, this is a great thing.
On the other hand, if they focus primarily on weight loss and you want to build lean muscle mass, this may not be so good. They won’t have quite the same level of experience behind them to help you get the results you desire.

Education can vary considerably, so it’s something to take into account. Don’t put all your emphasis on this however as there are some very good trainers with years and years of practical experience who don’t have much education, but at the same time, education does count.
Formal training does increase the knowledge base and can give them a strong foundation upon which to build your programs around.
Best case scenario is your trainer has a good education level and plenty of real-world experience.
It’s not enough to just be book smart though; they need to have trained real people and gotten real results.
What Is Their Training Style?
You’ll also want to consider what their training style is. Are they someone who is more demanding and barks orders? Or, do they play the role of the supportive friend, offering you encouragement every step of the way?
Once you know their training pattern, think about what you respond best to. Some people do respond very well to trainers who are very stern and demanding and need this level of push to get the job done.
Others don’t respond to this at all and want a warm trainer who is there for them when they need it. This will heavily tie in to your own motivational style, so think about that as you make your decision.
What Is Their Availability?
Finally, also consider what their availability is. You’ll need to know beforehand how often you want to be booking sessions with them. Are you looking to workout three times per week with that trainer? If so, ask up front whether they can offer this level of commitment.
Some trainers are quite busy with other clients and may not have time to take on this many sessions with you.
Likewise, some trainers may work at certain hours of the day that aren’t at a convenient time for you. Compare your schedules before you hire them, so that you don’t face problematic situations from the start.
Then once you have hired your trainer, remember that you are not married to them. Try one or two session first rather than signing up for the full blown ‘package’ deal that many trainers offer. The best way to really see if you are a good match together is to do a few sessions and discover how it goes. Then from there, if you are happy with your choice, you can go forward and book that package deal to get the cost savings you’re looking for.
